abstract: following the failure of the combatants in operation karbala-4 and in despite of the various problems which existed for launching the next operation, operation karbala-5 necessarily began in shalamcheh area in jan. 1987. an exclusive and very important operation included many experiences in different aspects, particularly be cause both sides had been entered into the scene with all of their forces and used every equipment, capabilities, means and experiences to dominant each other. thus, analyzing their functions such as their method of choosing the operational area, the reason of their success and failure, their operational management and decision-making, as well as their tactics and procedures all are important issues and valuable legacy which can be used effectively to encounter the future threats. in the second wave of this operation, the forces of muhammad rasul allah(pbuh) division under commandership of karbala headquarters launched their operation in one of the key axis and could defend the most important bridgehead therein during a 7 day difficult battle and through the combatants sacrifices and braveness. they neu tralized the heavy and extensive efforts of enemy forces who struggled to regain their lost positions. this article studies the effective reasons and functions for the combatants success.
